The party said the former president deserved to be honoured for achievements made when he was the party’s BOT chairman.By Oladimeji Kayode
The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Thursday, inaugurated a committee to organise a reception for former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, over his resignation as chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees (BOT).
The inauguration of the 17-man committee, headed by Yemi Adefulu, took place at Goodluck/Sambo Campaign headquarters , Moshood Abiola way, Abeokuta, the state capital .
The factional state chairman of the party, Dipo Odujinrin, who presided over the ceremony, said the committee has the mandate to plan and execute a befitting reception for the former president.
Mr. Odujinrin explained that  the reception was important because of Mr. Obasanjo’s  roles at keeping the country united. He said the former President’s tenure as BOT chairman of the party witnessed “the victory of our party in 2007 general elections.”
He  chronicled the achievements of  Mr. Obasanjo from his time as military ruler to 1999 when he was elected civilian president. He said having the opportunity to celebrate and honour living legends (like Mr. Obasanjo) was a rare honour.
The party boss said the committee has 90 days to submit its report, stressing  that the grand reception for Mr. Obasanjo, which is coming five months after the latter left office as BOT chairman, is not belated.
The Chairman of the reception organising  committee, Mr. Adefulu, in his acceptance speech, described Mr. Obasanjo as “an enigma, a unique man, a great Yoruba man, a warrior, an intellectual, a military and political strategist, a statesman, a resilient man tutored by war and nurtured by experience”
