According to one security official, clashes erupted when protesters tried to storm Media Production City, a compound based in a Cairo suburb that is home to many satellite TV channels.
Demonstrators threw gas canisters fired from armoured vehicles back towards police lines.
Ambulances were called to the scene, although there were no immediate reports of any casualties.
The protests came as the US Secretary of State sought to clarify comments he made to a Pakistani TV station.

John Kerry told Geo TV that the Egyptian military did not oust Mr Morsi and was instead "restoring democracy" in the country.
