Tinubu “in great shape” after minor stumble in Turkey
Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, has been described as being in good condition after briefly stumbling during a reception ceremony in Turkey, according to members of his team.
The 73-year-old president was being officially received by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Ankara when the incident occurred. Footage shared on the Turkish president’s official X account shows Tinubu walking past soldiers and dignitaries before losing his balance and falling. He was quickly assisted, and moments later appeared standing alongside Erdoğan, suggesting no serious injury.
Presidential aide Sunday Dare confirmed that Tinubu was unharmed and continued with his scheduled bilateral meetings. He later reassured the public via social media that the president was “in great shape” and that the state visit was progressing smoothly.
Another presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, explained that the president had stepped on a metal object on the floor, which caused him to momentarily lose balance. He downplayed the incident, describing it as a minor stumble rather than a fall.
Video clips of the moment circulated widely online, drawing public attention. Tinubu has previously experienced a similar incident in June 2024, which he addressed humorously at the time. That earlier occurrence also attracted sympathy from political figures, including opposition leader Atiku Abubakar, who called it unfortunate, while Shehu Sani remarked that it highlighted the president’s humanity.
Tinubu’s visit to Turkey was focused on strengthening diplomatic ties. Following talks between both leaders, Turkey and Nigeria announced new agreements covering economic, trade, and defence cooperation. The two countries reaffirmed a goal to boost bilateral trade to $5 billion, and Turkey pledged support for Nigeria’s security efforts, including military training and intelligence sharing.
Tinubu later emphasized Nigeria’s openness to partnerships, investment, and innovation that promote shared prosperity. He has been in office since 2023, after winning the presidential election against Abubakar.
